What is pharmacovigilance?
It is the science and set of activities related to the detection, evaluation, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any other possible medication-related problems.
What is an adverse event?
Any untoward medical occurrence that can appear during the use of a pharmaceutical product or medical device, without necessarily having a causal relationship. It is mainly a coincidence in time, without proven causality.
Examples:
- Headache
- Skin redness
- Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, vomiting, stomach burning, diarrhea)
What is a suspected adverse drug reaction?
Any undesirable clinical sign or symptom that suggests or gives the appearance of having a causal relationship to one or more pharmaceutical products.
Why should we report adverse events or suspected reactions?
- For patient safety.
- To evaluate the safety profile of our pharmaceutical products.
- Because we comply with current regulations and good pharmacovigilance practices.
